Whoopi Goldberg had an intriguing reaction to the new Superman film, and she didn’t hesitate to share it with stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan during a live conversation on The View.
The EGOT winner admitted to the DC blockbuster’s stars that she first had a negative association with a pivotal sequence in the James Gunn-directed tentpole, until she investigated why her intuition prompted her to feel that way.
“When I was sitting and watching the first scene between the two of you, I was thinking, ‘Okay, okay, this is fine,'” the 69-year-old actress added as the group sat at the Hot Topics table. “And progressively, I felt myself getting annoyed, and I couldn’t figure out what was happening.”

The Ghost celebrity asked, “What was it? I had forgotten what kindness looked like, and I kept expecting Superman to become more cheerful, but he isn’t. He has never been that. So I fell in love with you as Superman.”
She mentioned that she was friends with Christopher Reeve, the original Superman film actor, and that seeing Corenswet’s take on the character caused her to “just kind of question myself” and her relationship to the emotions of the scene.
“Who have I become that I can’t recognize kindness? Why was I expecting for you to transform into someone [Superman] had never been? Goldberg asked. “I know it sounds crazy, but it knocked me for a loop, because I thought, ‘Oh, that’s right, he’s nice, and he’s kind, and he’s different.'”
The conversation continued, with Goldberg emphasizing Corenswet’s alternative presentation of Superman.

“Thank you for saying that — it means so much,” the 32-year-old actor told Goldberg after she finished her assessment.
Corenswet explained in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly how he drew inspiration from Reeve for his character in the new film.

“I’ve listened to Christopher Reeve talk about how he felt going from theater and classical training to wearing tights on screen,” Corenswet wrote in EW’s June cover story. “It’s more difficult in some respects to play Superman than it is to do a great play or a dramatic film, because as an actor, you believe that the seriousness of the work supports you. It makes the whole thing feel more grounded. Playing a guy who wears his underwear outside and can fly is a unique challenge. I believe I had the good fortune of receiving a little of both. I was clearly on team trunks-on-the-outside with this iteration of Superman, but I could see James took his work very seriously.”
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC. Superman enters theaters on Friday.
