Carrie Underwood will serve as a judge on Season 8 of American Idol, which premieres on ABC next spring. She joins Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, taking over for Katy Perry.

Underwood won the fourth season of the Fox version of the competition in 2005.

“This upcoming season marks 20 years since Carrie won America’s hearts on Idol and launched her successful multi-Grammy Award-winning career,” Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich stated. “As a previous Idol and strong musical powerhouse, she adds a truly distinct viewpoint to one of television’s most popular series. This is a watershed moment for both the show and the viewers who have been watching for more than two decades. Welcome home, Carrie.”

According to ABC, Underwood is a country singer-songwriter who has sold over 85 million records and produced 28 No. 1 songs.
