Instagram has announced a significant extension of how music may be utilized in its Reels short-video feature.
“Starting today, you can add up to 20 tracks to a single reel and visually align audio with elements like text, stickers, and clips while you’re editing in the app,” according to a blog post.
“When you add numerous tracks, you’ll be producing your own distinct audio mix, which will be ascribed to you. So, when you discover new methods to express yourself through audio, your audience can store and reuse your audio mixes.”

Reels as (kind of) DJ mini-mixes. That is interesting, though it raises a few questions. For example, if Instagram’s future licensing negotiations include paying royalties based on usage – whether that be creations, views, or other metrics – how will the capacity to cram 20 songs into a 90-second video be reflected into such calculations?
