O.J. Simpson, who became one of America’s most infamous personalities during his murder trial in the 1990s, has died of cancer.
The former NFL player died on Wednesday in Las Vegas, his family announced. He was 76.
“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer,” the family said on X on Thursday.
“He was surrounded by his kids and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family requests that you respect their wishes for privacy and grace,” according to the brief statement.
The running back had been having treatment in Sin City after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Simpson’s career as an NFL MVP and actor came to an abrupt halt when he was tried for the 1994 murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman.
The trial became a national television and tabloid sensation, and Simpson’s controversial acquittal was regarded as one of the most significant failures of the American justice system.
Simpson is survived by four children from his two marriages, including his two youngest, Sydney and Justin, who he had with Brown.
In 1979, one of Simpson’s boys from his first marriage drowned.
