In recent seasons, the NFL has attempted to schedule games on Christmas Day; however, Thanksgiving remains its most significant holiday.
Since 1934, when former Detroit Lions owner George A. Richards proposed hosting the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day, NFL football has been a tradition. The tradition continues to thrive nearly a century later, with the NFL now scheduling a yearly tripleheader to provide fans with a football experience that complements the celebration that is concentrated on family, friends, and food.
As a tribute to the tradition’s origins, the Lions consistently host the inaugural Thanksgiving game. The Dallas Cowboys are the other team that hosts an annual contest on the holiday. They have been doing so since 1966, when they copied the Lions’ holiday tradition to place themselves in the national limelight, and they have achieved great success.
