Many people were impressed by Kendrick Lamar’s win in his battle with Drake because of his frequent music releases. His engineer, Nicolas de Porcel, recently spoke up about the process of recording those caustic diss songs.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“It was a little crazy,” he explained to EngineEars. “I received a call saying, ‘Stay on call, you’re going to be working.'” I’d get the tune, and after about six minutes, they’d say, ‘How are we looking?’ It was quite high pressure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He realized that the pressure he felt from being observed was from their want to get the tunes out. “As Dot was releasing these records, it was like, I was turning in the masters [and] it would drop like 12 minutes later,” recalled the musician. “It was amazing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicolas de Porcel helped mix and master three of Kendrick Lamar’s diss singles, including “Euphoria,” “Meet The Grahams,” and “Not Like Us.” These records were all released in less than a week, with “Euphoria” on a Tuesday (April 30), and “Meet The Grahams” and “Not Like Us” on the following Saturday (May 4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Problem, a Compton rapper, recounted K. Dot’s response when he heard Drake’s “Family Matters” and how he replied. “[Drake] released ‘Family Matters’, and I texted [Kendrick] like, ‘This ain’t it. “Man, it’s time to step on his head.” “He was like, ‘Say less,'” he explained. He explained that he moved away to use the restroom, and when he returned to his phone, “Meet The Grahams” had already aired, allowing “Family Matters” less than an hour to sit with the individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I said, ‘Wait, wait, wait!'” There is a problem. “I texted him, ‘Nia, you already [dropped the song?!].'” He says, ‘I’ve been waiting for this ni<\/strong>a to drop something.’ [Drake] had no idea what he would get. Drake made a video and all this sh*t. Sometimes you just need to know what to do and what not to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kendrick Lamar’s “Meet The Grahams” successfully countered Drake’s “Family Matters,” and “Not Like Us,” released less than 24 hours later, delivered the killing blow. The 6 God attempted a comeback with “The Heart Part 6,” but the damage had already been done, and he bowed out of the conflict several days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
