Kevin Smith has a lot of amazing stories from the 1990s that he loves to share about his adventures as a filmmaker.

Smith and Ben Affleck reportedly had a years-long spat over those articles, but they have subsequently patched things up, with Affleck even making an appearance in Clerks III.

Smith is now sharing another Affleck story, this one praising his thoughtfulness on set during their decades-long collaboration, which he probably won’t be upset with.

The discussion turned to Mallrats and working with Affleck on the movie, even though the legendary director of the 1990s has been busy promoting Dogma’s 25th anniversary and its re-release in theaters.

“He would say, ‘Hey, I’m not shooting for three days,’ when he came by. Can I take a plane back to Los Angeles to collaborate with Matt on the script? We have an appointment with Castle Rock. ‘Oh my God, definitely man, just come back before you have to film,’ I responded,” Smith told PEOPLE.

“He didn’t work every day,” the Clerks producer went on. Otherwise, he would be lounging in Minnesota. He always left me a thank-you card on my desk when he departed, which he did around three times during the shoot.

“I’d go in my office and there’s an envelope that said ‘Kevin,’ I’d open it up,” Smith continued, referring to Affleck’s thank-you cards. “Hey man, thanks for letting me go back to Los Angeles for our script,” exclaimed young Ben Affleck. I just wanted to let you know that I’m enjoying this movie a lot. Being among young folks is enjoyable. You’re cool and all that kind of stuff.”

Given that Affleck is consistently portrayed as such a stern individual in paparazzi photos when he is spotted out and about, that seems unexpected. However, Smith claims that he is quite considerate and doesn’t hesitate to express gratitude.

Excellent Will Hunting launched Ben Affleck into celebrity and went on to win numerous accolades, including two Oscars. He starred in the movies Chasing Amy and Dogma, directed by Kevin Smith, after Mallrats.

Smith told Deadline that Affleck is more than welcome to return for Dogma 2 when they start filming the sequel, in response to the question of whether he will feature in any of his upcoming movies.
