Over 200 famous artists recently signed an open letter asking precautions against artificial intelligence.
The letter highlights the growing use of technology to mimic performers’ voices and appearances. It also claims that it may have a negative impact on the music industry. Previously, singers such as Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish, Stevie Wonder, and others had their voices or appearances mimicked.
“This onslaught on human ingenuity has to be stopped. The letter states, “We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses, violate creators’ rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.” It was written by The Artist Rights Alliance, a non-profit organization led by numerous music business veterans. Rosanne, Johnny Cash’s daughter, is a board member.
This is not the first time artists have banded together to demand protection from A.I. Earlier this year, more than 300 creatives signed a letter supporting the bipartisan No Artificial Intelligence Fake Replicas And Unauthorized Duplications Act. 21 S*vage, Chuck D, Common, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Questlove, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and others signed the letter. “The No AI FRAUD Act will preserve your fundamental human right to your voice & likeness, protecting everyone from nonconsensual deepfakes,” it states, asking readers to “protect your individuality. “It’s time for bad actors using AI to face the music,” Representative María Elvira Salazar stated. “This bill plugs a hole in the law and gives artists and U.S. citizens the power to protect their rights, their creative work, and their fundamental individuality online.”
