His worries about humanity’s future, as artificial intelligence begins to infiltrate every part of our daily life, have been echoed by Senator Bernie Sanders.
Whether AI is being used to assist people communicate across language boundaries or even just to help you plan your next trip, there’s no doubting that it’s an amazing tool.
As he discussed the technology and its potential applications, Sanders is one of those who has recognized its advantages, but he also pointed out that while AI isn’t always “bad,” it isn’t only “good.”

The 83-year-old stated in an interview with Gizmodo that he believes the nature of AI “depends on how it is used” and “who benefits from it.”
Sanders contended that unless political dynamics are actively altered, the advantages of AI are “going to accrue to the people on top at the expense of working people,” much like current systems of wealth and power.

Sanders, who has spent a significant portion of his life avoiding the use of artificial intelligence, claimed to have discussed the topic with tech CEOs and “one of the leading experts in the world on artificial intelligence,” and discovered “differences of opinion.”
The ‘doomsday’ scenario is conceivable, he conceded, but it is not a given.
Sanders clarified: “First, how will AI affect the economy? There will be significant employment losses, according to some. I usually concur with them.
Not so bad, according to some, because new jobs will be generated. This technology revolution will be similar to all others. It doesn’t really matter if jobs are produced or lost. Thus, people are at odds. This, in my opinion, is not comparable to the Industrial Revolution. This might be far worse, in my opinion.
The second thing to note is that this is not science fiction. Some extremely smart people—I spoke with one today—are quite concerned that artificial intelligence will eventually take over our civilization and that humans won’t be able to regulate technology. It will be beyond our control.

Sanders noted that in this situation when humans are “unable to control” AI, “it may be able to control us.”
He went on to say: “That’s kind of the doomsday scenario – and there is some concern about that among very knowledgeable people in the industry.”
Sanders is eager to ensure that AI continues to help people “economically as well as emotionally” for the time being.
He remarked, “Unfortunately, humans are going to get lost in that development. We’re developing all kinds of technology: you’re going to be able to do this, you’re going to be able to do that.” Additionally, they will experience increasing levels of loneliness, mental instability, and unhappiness.
Therefore, we aim to ensure that technology serves people. That must be the motivating factor.
