Deezer has implemented an AI labeling system for music streaming in order to provide complete transparency regarding AI-generated tracks.
Deezer, a global music platform headquartered in Paris, has implemented an artificial intelligence (AI) tagging system for music broadcasting. The DSP will now explicitly indicate which albums and songs contain recordings that are entirely AI-generated. The company recently launched its AI music detection tool, which reveals that nearly one-fifth (18%) of all music uploaded on a daily basis—more than 20,000 tracks—are 100% AI generated.

“We have observed a substantial increase in the delivery of AI-generated music in the past few months and observe no indication of a slowdown.” Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, stated, “It is a widespread issue, and we are dedicated to guiding the industry in enhancing transparency by assisting music enthusiasts in determining which albums contain AI music.”

“We are of the opinion that a responsible and transparent approach is essential for establishing trust with our users and the music industry, despite the fact that AI is not inherently good or bad.” At a time when copyright law is being questioned in favor of training AI models, we are also unwavering in our dedication to protecting the rights of artists and composers.
Although Deezer currently streams only a small percentage of entirely AI-generated music (approximately 0.5%), it is clear that the primary objective of uploading these tracks to streaming platforms is to commit fraud. Deezer has discovered that up to 70% of the streams produced by tracks that are entirely artificially generated are fraudulent. It is crucial to note that Deezer excludes streams from royalty payments when stream manipulation of any kind is detected.
In order to mitigate any adverse effects on the user experience and artist remuneration, Deezer is currently excluding tracks that are entirely AI-generated from algorithmic and editorial recommendations.

Deezer submitted two patent applications in December for its AI detection technology, which concentrates on two distinct approaches to identifying distinctive signatures that are employed to differentiate between synthetic and authentic content.
Deezer’s AI music detection utility establishes an industry standard by detecting 100% AI-generated music from the most prolific generative models, including Suno and Udio. Additionally, it offers the potential to incorporate detection capabilities into virtually any other comparable tool, provided that pertinent data examples are accessible. Deezer has also made substantial strides in the development of a system that is more generalizable, allowing it to identify AI-generated content without the need for a specific dataset to train on.
This reported increase coincides with an increasing apprehension regarding the potential for governments to reduce copyright laws in order to facilitate AI development and the training of their models with copyrighted material by AI companies. Deezer is dedicated to safeguarding the rights of creators and artists, and it is the sole streaming platform to have signed the global statement on AI training.
