Doechii won the 2025 BET Awards’ Best Female Hip Hop Artist title.

She took use of the opportunity to give a stirring address in which she acknowledged the protests taking place in Los Angeles.

“As much as I am honoured by this award, I do want to address what’s happening right now outside of the building,” she stated.

“There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order.”

Despite speculation that they would not take place because of local protests, the Awards, which recognize excellence among Black entertainers, were presented Monday night in downtown Los Angeles.

“I want you all to think about what kind of democracy it looks like when every time we use our democratic right to demonstrate, the military is used against us,” Doechii went on. “Trump is employing military troops to put an end to a protest. That kind of government—what is it?

Amid the demonstrations against the ongoing immigration raids, President Trump has sent National Guard troops to Los Angeles. To voice their displeasure with Trump’s policies, protesters blocked the 101 highway on Sunday near the location of the BET Awards celebration.

“People are being swept up and torn from their families, and I feel it’s my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,” Doechii said.
