Todd and Julie Chrisley have not only regained their freedom, but they may also recoup the millions of dollars they paid in restitution.
President Trump pardoned the Chrisleys on Tuesday, citing what he considered to be an unjust trial and sentence, as you are aware.
The Chrisleys were sentenced to over seven years in prison and were required to pay over $17 million in restitution. Their attorney has stated that they have repaid a portion of the restitution, but not the entire amount.
As per federal law, the debt of unpaid restitution is promptly canceled when a President pardons a prisoner…. Translation: The Chrisleys are no longer required to pay any outstanding debts.

However, it is important to note that the President has the authority to mandate that the victims who received restitution repay the individual who was convicted of the offense, as per federal law. We have yet to review the pardon document that the President signed in order to ascertain whether repayment is a viable option.
Todd was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while Julie was sentenced to 7 years behind bars, after the Chrisleys were found guilty of federal allegations of bank fraud and tax evasion.

The reality TV couple had previously submitted appeals for reduced sentences, but they were rejected. However, Trump intervened with full pardons. Todd and Julie were initially indicted by a federal grand jury in 2019, during Trump’s inaugural tenure as president.

Last year, Savannah, the daughter of Todd and Julie, denounced her parents’ convictions at the Republican National Convention. She accused the prosecutors who prosecuted their federal case in Georgia of politicizing the proceedings and even claimed that an Obama-appointed judge referred to her family as “the Trumps of the South.”
Alex Little, a partner at Litson PLLC and an attorney for the Chrisleys, stated in a statement that “President Trump acknowledged what we have maintained from the outset: Todd and Julie were victimized due to their conservative beliefs and public profile.” Their prosecution was contaminated by political bias and numerous constitutional violations.
