On Friday, an environment conference was inaugurated in Nepal to address the effects of global climate change, specifically the draining of snow and ice on the highest Himalayan peaks.
It is anticipated that the three-day conference in Kathmandu, “Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity,” will encompass discussions of critical climate issues.
“We are sending this message loud and clear from the summit of Sagarmatha (Everest), the world’s highest peak, that the protection of the mountains is the protection of the planet.” Promoting the preservation of the mountains is equivalent to safeguarding our oceans. In his address to the inaugural meeting, Nepal Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli stated, “To safeguard the mountains is to safeguard humanity itself.”

Eight of the world’s highest mountains, including Mount Everest, are situated in Nepal. Significant concerns have been expressed regarding the rapidly melting glaciers in the Himalayan mountains as a result of global warming. The risk of rock slides, landslides, and avalanches has been elevated as a result of the melting of snow and ice, which has exposed the mountains.
Scientists have cautioned that the Himalayan mountains may lose up to 80% of their glaciers if the Earth’s temperature rises in the future decades or centuries. According to them, climate change may contribute to an increase in the frequency of sudden floods and avalanches in the years ahead.

Nepal Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba stated, “The tragedy is that the Himalayas are currently experiencing an unprecedented stress test in real time, which is not only revealing the fragile nature of our mountain ecosystems but also providing clear evidence of the absence of meaningful global climate action.” “Nepal is presented with a severe dilemma due to its vulnerability to disasters and its mountainous terrain.”
Deuba stated that Nepal has recently been the victim of a succession of severe weather events that have had a devastating impact on the lives of its citizens and the livelihoods of its residents.

She stated that “droughts, water scarcity, and forest fires have caused untold suffering to the people across the country,” in addition to the large-scale devastation and damage caused by floods and glacial lake outbursts.
Ministers from Bhutan, India, and the Maldives are participating in the conference.
The organizers have stated that they plan to release a Kathmandu declaration following the conclusion of the discussions on Sunday.
