Google is introducing a new artificial intelligence (AI) mode that more firmly integrates chatbot capabilities into its search engine, with the objective of providing users with the experience of conversing with an expert.
On Tuesday, the “AI Mode” was introduced in the United States and is shown as an option in the Google search bar.
The company’s annual developers conference in Mountain View, California, was the venue for the announcement of the modification. This modification is part of the tech giant’s efforts to maintain its competitive edge against ChatGPT and other AI services, which have the potential to undermine Google’s dominance in online search.
A subscription AI tool was also announced by the company, in addition to plans for its own augmented reality spectacles.

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, declared that the integration of the company’s Gemini chatbot into its search function signified a “new phase of the AI platform shift.”
Pichai informed the audience that AI can be asked both longer and more complex inquiries with the assistance of more advanced reasoning.

The company’s entry into AI-powered spectacles follows its pioneering of smart glasses with its “Google Glasses,” which ultimately failed, over a decade ago.

The new Google spectacles are being developed in collaboration with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, eyeglass retailers. They will include a microphone, speakers, and camera.
Google aspires to compete with Meta’s AI-powered spectacles, which are manufactured in partnership with Ray-Ban, through the renewed effort.
The company stated that it anticipated commencing the development of the new product later this year.

Leo Gebbie, principal analyst and director for the Americas at CCS Insight, stated that it was anticipated that Google would integrate AI more closely into its products.
He stated that he believed the chatbot would reduce the number of web pages that users must navigate, while also enabling them to submit more detailed inquiries.

“This should result in a reduction in the amount of time the end user spends browsing the web and an increase in the amount of time spent conversing with Google’s AI tools,” he stated.
Gebbie emphasized that any modifications to Google’s search engine are “of paramount importance,” as the search business generates the majority of Google’s revenue.
The nature of Google’s search engine could be fundamentally altered by its efforts to maintain pace with ChatGPT, which could have an impact on its profits.
“Cory Johnson, chief market strategist at Epistrophy Capital Research, stated that Google is becoming more efficient at answering questions, but less efficient at generating clicks, which is how they are compensated.”
The announcements are also made in the context of the company’s ongoing legal conflict in the United States regarding potential modifications to its business, which was initiated after a judge determined that it possessed a monopoly in search.
Google’s most recent endeavors to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its services have been met with varied results.

The AI Overviews feature, which was introduced by Google at its developers conference last year, provides AI-generated summaries that are presently displayed at the top of search results.
It initially elicited derision from users who shared some of the unusual responses they received. For instance, it suggested to one user that non-toxic glue could assist in adhering cheese to pizza.
Another response that was extensively disseminated was that geologists suggest that humans consume one rock per day.
At that time, a Google spokesperson stated that these were “Isolated Examples.”
On Tuesday, Mr. Pichai announced that AI Overviews is currently utilized in over 200 countries and territories, with a monthly usage of 1.5 billion.
Pichai stated that AI Overviews are responsible for over 10% of the growth in the categories of queries that display them in its largest markets, the United States and India.
“It is one of the most successful search launches in the past decade,” he continued.
