There are many spectacular college football entrances, but few are as electrifying or loud as Virginia Tech going out to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” for a huge game.
When Virginia Tech launched its new video board in 2000, fans were given the option of three songs: “Enter Sandman,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” or “Sirius.” This became an iconic tradition at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia. Fans eventually began bouncing up and down in unison as the thunderous intro began, with over 60,000 people (the majority of whom were not alive when the song was released) screaming out the lyrics as the Hokies ran onto the field. The stadium’s bounce has been recorded on local seismographs on several occasions.
Despite pleas for Metallica to perform a live entrance or visit Blacksburg, the closest they’ve ever been to having the iconic band on-site was a pre-recorded video before a 2011 game versus Miami. That is, until Wednesday night, when Metallica made its debut appearance at Lane Stadium as part of their M72 World Tour.

During Wednesday’s event, Hokie fans had a significant influence, as the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory registered a surge as Metallica started performing “Enter Sandman.”

Setting off the Richter scale for a concert is a great achievement. According to the footage, Metallica’s performance in Blacksburg created an unbelievable atmosphere.
We don’t frequently see stadium tours stop in college towns outside of big urban areas — places like Blacksburg aren’t exactly easy to get to — yet Metallica’s show at Lane Stadium sold out quickly.
