Don’t give up hope for a unified Journey, which appears to have resolved Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon’s current disagreement.
That quarrel, as we reported closer to the beginning of August, centered on touring issues between Cain and Schon. With each owning a 50% stake in the company in charge of Journey’s operations, the veteran musicians have long feuded over money and other issues.
When it comes to one of the companies, Freedom 2020, the two couldn’t agree on things like tour accommodation fees, security charges, the employment status of various workers, and more. Cain cited the alleged unilateral expenditure by Schon as a particularly major issue.
Cain’s late-July filing to the Delaware Chancery Court revealed the issues that led to the cancelation of the UK portion of the band’s current tour.

In the case, the 74-year-old requested that the court appoint a third-party director to Freedom 2020 in order to resolve the deadlock (between him and Schon, who retained all voting rights) over many of the legendary rock group’s economic decisions.
Given the 50-50 voting rights structure, it was becoming exceptionally difficult to agree on operational matters and choose another director. Cain discussed in more detail.
The impasse (but not the larger schism) appears to have been resolved; Cain’s attorneys just announced the hiring of a tie-breaking independent director to oversee the specifics of Freedom 2020.
Furthermore, the announcement came after Schon admitted last week that he and Cain “don’t always see eye-to-eye on everything or, sometimes, on pretty much anything.” However, the 70-year-old indicated a wish to bring on the third-party director and resolve the conflict so that the tour could continue.
Running with that, Cain’s legal team’s next statement reads: “Mr. Schon is prohibited from acting unilaterally on behalf of the Company, and any future deadlock between Mr. Cain and Mr. Schon will be resolved by a vote of the Custodian.”

“Mr. Cain is elated with the outcome and looks forward to moving beyond this matter so that Journey can continue the band’s 50th Anniversary Freedom Tour,” according to the message.
As planned, Journey will begin their tour in San Diego tonight, play four more gigs in the United States through September 8th, go to Brazil and Chile later that month, and then entertain fans in Japan until October. At the moment, it does not appear that the group has rescheduled the previously mentioned UK concerts, which were also slated to begin in October.
