John Mayall, a blues and rock star, has died at the age of 90.

The musician died “peacefully” on July 22, after fighting “health issues” that kept him from touring.

A statement on his Facebook page read: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce that John Mayall died peacefully in his California home yesterday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by loving family.” John’s amazing touring career was cut short due to health concerns, but he has now found peace. John Mayall provided us ninety years of tireless work to educate, inspire, and entertain.”

Mayall had recently been confirmed for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with the ceremony scheduled for October 19 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mayall was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2005 Honours List.

Noting his accomplishments during a storied career, his family statement added: “An appointed OBE (Officer of the British Empire), 2x Grammy-nominated artist, and recent inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, John is survived by his 6 children, Gaz, Jason, Red, Ben, Zak, and Samson, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.” His past wives, Pamela and Maggie, his dedicated secretary, Jane, and his close friends all shower him with affection. We, the Mayall family, cannot express enough gratitude to his followers and long list of bandmembers for the unwavering support and affection we have been honored to witness over the previous six decades.”

In the 1960s, he created John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, which included Cream’s Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce, Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie from Fleetwood Mac, as well as famed drummer Aynsley Dunbar and Mick Taylor (previously of The Rolling Stones).

There was conflict along the way, and Clapton forgot to inform Mayall that he had created Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce.

The prolific star has released numerous albums, the most recent being 2022’s ‘The Sun Is Shining Down’.

Tributes have already begun to flow in.

Walter Trout, Mayall’s Bluesbreakers bandmate, wrote on Facebook: “He is and will always be my musical mentor, greatest supporter, and incredible talent.” We have just lost a giant. I loved him like a father and always will.”
