Hey, did somebody mention Beetlejuice three times? Because the latest trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice just dropped, and–wait, we just said Beetlejuice three times.
Four now! In any case, it worked: Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel will be released later this year, and a brand new trailer not only reunites the cast (Michael Keaton! Winona Ryder! Catherine O’Hara!) but also provides our best look yet at the newcomers (Jenna Ortega! Monica Bellucci! Willem Dafoe! Justin Theroux!). All that, plus graphics reminiscent of Burton’s acclaimed original picture, such as stop-motion animation and puppetry. It looks like one heck of a party!

The bio-exorcist has returned, and after decades, Michael Keaton appears to be easily slipping back into the Beetlejuice (five, now) stripes. It’s also a thrill to watch Ryder reprise her role as Lydia Deetz, this time with a daughter, Jenna Ortega’s Astrid, who unintentionally unleashes Beetlejuice (six!) on the Deetz family. Willem Dafoe’s undead Wolf Jackson, Monica Bellucci’s face-stapled Delores, and Justin Theroux’s preening Rory are also new additions to the cast, though how they all fit into the plot remains to be seen. Long-time Beetlejuice (seven!) fans will be pleased to know that the sandworm hole, as well as the title character’s proclivity for spewing unfathomable monsters from the middle of his face, are returning.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Beetlejuice has returned! Following an unforeseen family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family come to Winter River. Lydia, still plagued by Beetlejuice, has her life turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the enigmatic model of the town in the attic and accidently opens the portal to the afterlife. With turmoil developing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time before someone shouts Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon reappears to unleash his own brand of mayhem.” For those keeping score, that’s now ten Beetlejuice mentions. Make that eleven.
Wednesday writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote the sequel, which will be released in UK cinemas on September 6. Here’s hope, all these years later, that Tim Burton still has the juice, and that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice lives up to Beetlejuice. 14!
