Oh Young-soo, the “Squid Game” actor from South Korea, was found guilty of sexual misconduct by a local court on Friday after being charged with assaulting a woman in 2017.

In 2022, the 79-year-old became the first South Korean to receive a Golden Globe Award for best supporting actor in a series for his portrayal of a supposedly defenseless old man in the smash hit Netflix dystopian drama.

According to the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court, the actor was sentenced to eight months in prison, with a two-year suspension. The court also ordered him to complete 40 hours of sexual violence classes.

Judge Jeong Yeon-ju stated that the victim’s own records of the assault and her accusations are “consistent… and appear to be statements that cannot be made without actually experiencing them,” according to the court.

For some South Koreans, “Squid Game” comes too close to home.
Oh was indicted without custody in 2022 on charges of sexually abusing an unidentified lady twice.

According to the Suwon District Court, the occurrences occurred in 2017 while Oh was staying in a rural location for a theatre performance, on a walking route and in front of the victim’s residence.

“Squid Game,” a Netflix comedy that depicts a gloomy world in which underprivileged people are forced to play in lethal versions of typical children’s games, has swiftly acquired popularity.

Within less than four weeks of its release in 2021, it drew 111 million viewers.

The show’s success has increased South Korea’s increasingly significant influence on worldwide popular culture, following the global success of K-pop band BTS and the Oscar-winning film “Parasite.”

Several heavyweights in South Korea’s film industry, notably late filmmaker Kim Ki-duk and actor Cho Jae-hyun, have faced sexual assault charges.
