George Winston, A Pianist, Died At The Age Of 73

George Winston, a Grammy Award-winning pianist, died at the age of 73.

George died on June 4 after a decade-long struggle with cancer, according to a statement on the solo pianist’s website.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that George Winston has died after a 10-year battle with cancer.” “On Sunday, June 4, 2023, George quietly and painlessly left this world while sleeping,” the message said.

“George bravely battled serious cancers, including a successful bone marrow transplant for Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) in 2013 at City of Hope in Duarte, California, which thankfully extended his life by ten years.” Throughout his cancer treatments, George continued to write and record new music, and he remained true to his greatest passion: performing in front of live audiences while raising funds for Feeding America to help fight the national hunger crisis, as well as donating proceeds from each of his concerts to local food banks.”

After rising to fame in the 1980s with a trio of records: Autumn, Winter Into Spring, and December, the solo pianist sold over 15 million copies of his albums over the course of his career. He released 16 albums in total, receiving the Grammy for Best New Age Album for Forest in 1994.

“George is predeceased by his parents, George and Mary Winston, and is survived by his sister, niece, and nephew,” the statement read. George Winston’s family will arrange a private memorial service.”
