At the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, an honorary Palme d’Or was presented to Harrison Ford.
The Indiana Jones star was unexpectedly named the festival’s honorary Palme d’Or winner during an introduction on Thursday at the Grand Theatre Lumière.
Although an honorary or non-competitive Palme d’Or might be given to a director or actor for their body of work, the Palme d’Or is often given to the festival’s finest film.
Ford’s remarks about his upcoming movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny when winning the prize were, “I am pleased and honoured, but I got a movie you gotta see.” He also made light of the onstage film sequence honoring his accomplishments. “They say that just before you pass away, your life flashes before your eyes. I just experienced that.”
Earlier this week at the inaugural ceremony, Michael Douglas was presented with a lifetime achievement award. While Ford’s Palme d’Or was a surprise, his was a prior announcement.
On Thursday, the festival’s non-competitive premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny took place. In the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones film series, Harrison Ford reprises his role as the title character, who is getting ready to retire until his estranged goddaughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) confesses that she is looking for the Archimedes Dial, a time-traveling gadget.
The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on June 30.
