Following BBL Surgery, A Florida Mother Of Two Died

The family of a woman who died undergoing a cosmetic operation in Florida is demanding justice.

Jaynisha “Jayla” Williams, 26, died in October 2021 after failing to awaken from the anaesthetic she had prior to the operation at Best U Now, a cosmetic surgery center in Plantation, Fla. It was then determined that the doctor who administered the anesthesia was medically forbidden to do so.

Latoshia Leggett, Williams’ mother, said she and her daughter flew from Hillsborough County to Best U Now on October 20, 2021, for the treatment, which included a breast augmentation and Brazilian butt lift. Leggett describes constantly inquiring about the status of her daughter’s procedure while sitting in the waiting room while Williams was in surgery, only to be assured that everything was OK.

“I was asking every hour, ‘How’s my daughter doing? ‘How is everything going?’ ‘She’s fine,’ they kept saying. “Everything is fine,” Leggett said to NBC Miami 6.

However, as time passed and other patients left the facility, Leggett became increasingly concerned, especially when an ambulance with sirens blasting arrived at Best U Now. The mother claims that she learned of her daughter’s death only as her daughter’s body was being rolled out of the facility on a stretcher.

The ambulance arrived. That’s when I asked, ‘Excuse me, can someone explain what’s going on?'” Leggett explained. “They took me cordially and said, ‘Your daughter is dead.'”

The cosmetic treatments were performed, according to a report from the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office, but Williams never regained consciousness from the anaesthetic. Her cause of death was given as unknown. According to Dr. John Edward Nees, Best U Now’s designated physician, Dr. Millicent Muir, who administered anesthesia to Williams, was barred from sedating patients owing to a prior, unrelated complaint.

The Florida Health Department has filed many administrative complaints against Best U Now and Dr. Nees in reaction to Williams’ death. The FHD has requested that Best U Now’s registration be suspended or canceled, as well as that Dr. Nees be fined, as part of their allegations. There have been no arrests in connection with Williams’ death.

Williams’ sister, Kimia Spikes, praised her late brother’s caring demeanor. Williams was “extremely kind and always knew what to say,” Spikes added. “A pleasant personality and an all-around lovely soul.” According to Williams’ family, no one from Best U Now has reached out to them to express their sympathies following their loss.

Williams is survived by two small children, a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old, both of whom, according to Leggett, have yet to realize their mother’s death.

“It’s difficult,” she said. “They want to go to heaven to see their mother. They don’t get it.”
